Trendwatching: Statement Jewelry

While I was in Hawaii I was able to nab the May issue of SCawaii with w*c chief Wakatsuki Chinatsu as the covergirl :korila:

It’s a fabulous issue and a few trend updates really stuck with me. SCawaii is doing a great job with their mag showing trends and great coordinates. Sometimes I pass them up for the flashier Popteen and Ageha, but SCawaii really does smart looks. :sparkle2:

Chinatsu in Chanel showcasing our Mori Jewelry trend. So hard to beat.

The title for this issue: Power Mori “Value Set” Issue (lol)

I talked about Mori (盛り) previously during the Mori Gyaru article, it is a verb meaning to raise or build up. It’s used more like a video game idea of Leveling Up. Kind of like how the chant “Age! Age!” has become some popular with gals (meaning to raise up as well). It’s so common to see in magazines recently when discussing hair, make-up, coordinates and now jewelry. :cheery:

Like the cover the title of this section is Power Mori Jingling Accessories Go!

Mainly since Mori means to pile up or have more impact, it’s talking about Powering Up by stacking accessories. :sparkle2:

Reasons why Statement Jewelry and getting Mori is great

I love this trend and I love how SCawaii lays out it out.

Here’s reasons why you should love this trend as well.

 Just like the scarf trend (which has really blown up), jewelry can be really cheap when you want it to be.

 Although gal is such a flighty fashion with trends rising and falling with such rapid speed. Jewelry is something that can transfer season to season depending on how you wear it.

 A big critique I hear about gaijin gals is their inability to accessorize, and SCawaii lays exactly how to accessorize depending on your style and taste.

Where this trend is coming from

The biggest influence seems to be coming from YSL’s bold collection of fashion jewelry this season.

As you can see a lot of the images in SCawaii look a lot like YSL’s collection.

Gal Brands doing Mori Jewelry

Egoist shows cross, turquoise and big stone necklace trends.

Lip Service showing silver and black bangle, piling up beading and long necklace bead trends.

Duras showing Medallion, cross, turquoise, and small-and-big stone trends.

Let’s get Mori Jewelry tips!

There are some easy tips to follow to make sure you’re wearing enough, but not too much jewelry and placing it to suit your outfit.

 Those of us with large chests benifit from the big stone trend with one hanging to keep the necklace centered. Those with smaller chests look best with the long bead strands or the Duras medallion necklace.

 If you want to wear large earrings, it’s best to wear your hair up and keep hair accessories away from the jewelry. The European Vintage section shows to great examples of this.

 Hate your arms? Love your bangles! Wide bracelets make the arms look smaller and draw attention away from the upper arm which tends to be the problem area. Not to mention tons of bracelets draw the eye to your excellent summer manicure

 The more jewelry you wear, the smarter it is to keep a color scheme. Gold and turquoise is an excellent one to follow this summer along with pink and gold and silver and black.

 Short hair girls, this is a fabulous chance to wear some dangle earrings to show off your lovely neck. Also pair with a large stone necklace to further elongate your neck.

So how do you feel about the Statement Jewelry trend? I’m loving it and already bought some more pieces in Hawaii (lol!). Pics soon ^_^;;

Looking at this, it makes me feel like maybe I’m too picky about certain things, haha. I really can’t stand things on my fingers, so I’m reluctant to wear big rings, but I like the one they chose for the European Trend. I also like the Ethnic trend ideas as well because I have a lot of African jewlery (my parents are from Nigeria). :star2:

I think the big necklaces and bangels attract me the most. I’d like some more bangels now; I have a problem with wide shoulders, so great tip! Also that Lip Service necklace in the middle… :hearts: wantwantwant!

Question: What do you think about the weight of the larger-sized brand earrings? I’m also very picky about large earrings because I don’t want grandma lobes, lol. Do you feel they’re very heavy?

Lastly, have a great time in Hawaii! :hearts3:

By brand do you mean Lip Service or brand like the Japanese use it for like Chanel? Gal Brand jewelry tends now to be heavy since heavy = expensive so it’s more to ship. Brand items like YSL can often be a bit more weighty. I have a pair of black obsidian dangle earrings from them and they are a bit hefty. Most of my other brand stuff isn’t. I think the more minerals fake or real you put on an item the heavier it’ll get

Oh man, I wish I could pick up this issue, it looks really nice! Thanks for taking the time to scan in and explain this article.

One thing I am really lacking is jewelry for sure! You know I had a bunch when I was 14-16 but none of it was mature or stylish so I tossed it all and now I have so little left haha.

I like the pieces in the euro vintage and mod pages. Especially the mod jewelry :loveword: I will have to start building my collection again.

And especially thanks for the styling tips! I never thought about my chest in relation to necklaces (I used to have a very medium sized chest but now its all teeny XP) and having bangles to draw the eye away from the upper arm! What a simple way to hide a trouble spot :)

I hope you are having a fabulous vacation, I bet the weather is lovely in Hawaii. I’m looking forward to seeing photos :sparkle2:

You’ll be able to pick up any new one very soon! I’m so jealous you’re going. I’m not ready to go back, but I do miss the comforts :-D

YAY go bangles, you’ll love it :-D

I’m a jewelry fanatic. It seems like I buy jewelry more than anything else. ^o^’

I already own a turquoise bracelet, so I’ll try pairing it with gold now. I’m going to start looking for some floral bangles as well. Florals are definitely a favorite of mine. <3

Thanks for posting the scans and tips! :)

You’re off to a wonderful start already :-D I actually dug out all my jewelry and played around with what pairings were in season more. It was quite fun!

Sadly I don’t have the super stone of turquoise to make it instantly in the now  I’m sure your bracelet is lovely

  4. April 17, 2010 / 5:07 pm

    I love it!! :hearts:
I’m definitely one of those girls who needs to learn to accessorize more, though I have plenty of costume jewelry & such… need to make some use out of it!
    I can’t wait to see your pieces though~ I’m sure they’re fabulous :hearts2:

And you rock them splendidly well :-D

  7. April 17, 2010 / 8:16 pm

This is awesome, I never know what kind of accessories to look for when coordinating with Gyaru trends, so this really helps me out. Great post as always!!

      April 18, 2010 / 7:52 pm

Happy to share, this got me excited too :-D

  8. April 18, 2010 / 2:00 am

heh i recently got into accessories, they really add pop!
since my everyday style leans more towards the simple glamorous, i love rock and mode stuff: chain belts, rosaries and drapy necklaces to make up for the print-lessness of my outfits haha.

although, it is always tough to choose between silver and gold! especially with hardware on bags and jackets, do you mix the two mitsu?

    • Mitsu
      April 18, 2010 / 7:54 pm

My mom was such a hater of blending the two, that it’s kind of stuck in my head that it’s wrong. However, now I love to do the blend. Although if I’m wearing say my Chanel chain bag with its silver hardware, I try to keep my gold a little more toned down, but not out of the picture :D

  9. April 18, 2010 / 3:42 am

Oooh darn, I will need to start prioritizing accessories now, haha!!

      April 18, 2010 / 7:54 pm

Get your rock on girly! :-D

  10. April 18, 2010 / 4:44 am

I love that Mori Girl and Gyaru are mixing. I recently saw a girl in Tokyo rocking the mix look–she honestly looked like she stepped out of a magazine…in a good way (so rare to see that too). Since I love jewelry, I totally agree that jewelry is one of those things that can last a long time without going out of style (depending on how you wear it). I have tons of vintage jewels that my mom and grandma gave me and while they are clearly high-quality vintage, they can really look stylish with the right outfit.

F21 also had great, cheap jewelry for a quick fix. I didn`t buy this issue–but you are making me wish I had! Love Duras the best up there!

    • Mitsu
      April 18, 2010 / 7:56 pm

Wow I’m so jealous! I only have a few vintage pieces like that, but I treasure them  I love the timelessness jewelry brings.

I love seeing the streets girls doing it so stunningly well, like you just want to give them a handclap. But I don’t think a lot of people not living in Japan realize it’s the exception not the rule -_-

  11. April 18, 2010 / 11:01 am

    Love this!

I wanna pick up this issue now! I’ve never really looked at Scawaii before, I’m always more drawn to Popteen and Egg…but this is great!

I’ve been on the lookout for great new accessories lately…accessorizing an outfit really makes a huge difference!

    • Mitsu
      April 18, 2010 / 7:57 pm

I used to only get them for their freebie stuff since they’re the only gal magazine left handing out freebies with each issue. But now I think they’re really making their own name. At least this issue made me think about getting a subscription :-D

  12. April 18, 2010 / 2:30 pm

Thank you for this great post :) SCawaii is a great magazine, it´s one of my favorites!
I love the different fashion statements you can make by wearing different pieces of jewelry! I never paid too much attention on accessories but since I started getting into gyaru fashion I always want to make sure every outfit is well-accessorized :sparkle2:

    • Mitsu
      April 18, 2010 / 7:59 pm

      Yes!

I love that gyaru does that to people! It makes you really use your noggin and think out choices clothing options and make-up options that you wouldn’t have previously thought of. It makes us all improve how we want to look :korila:

  13. April 18, 2010 / 3:20 pm

I’ve noticed a lot of similar items popping up here, so I think this is a great post because it will be easy enough for people to get a hold of something. And like you said, jewellery can always be worked into an outfit even if it is ‘out of season’.

Glad you had a good time in Hawaii :)

      April 18, 2010 / 8:00 pm

Absolutely! It’s so easy to transfer western pieces into this. I just love that :hearts3:

  14. April 18, 2010 / 6:10 pm

Been a long time reader. Love you blog a lot cause I think you do a great job of explaining gal fashion!

I think in western cultures we’re a little use to keeping it simple so we don’t experiment too much with accessorizing like so. But I do agree with you completely that accessories is a great cheap way to make an outfit look better and is transferable with seasons. Absolutely love the European vintage accessories :hearts:

Thank you for a great post !

  18. April 20, 2010 / 11:46 pm

I absolutely adore this trend! The mode stuff is more of my everyday style, but I also like the look of the European vintage pieces as well. Not gal brand, but I lust for all of these:

OMG. Thank you, THANK YOU, THAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU.

My biggest problem – even more than make-up which I am slowly but surely starting to get right! – is accessorising. I’m so clueless! I’ll definitely ask my friend to get me the May 2010 issue of SCawaii!

    Again, thank you SO much.
