Marie the Arpakasso Alpaca & the Alpaca nails

For those of you who follow my twitter, know I’m alpaca obsessed. Judging by the tumblr reblogs and comments on last contest entry quite a few of you share my plush love. The Valentine’s ones are especially adorable. So I’m obsessed and I needed new nails. :upheart:

Nail Salon Bibi & the Alpaca nails

I decided to go to a new place Nail Salon Bibi. They had late hours and a hodai (all you can get) special. Their work and their price fit each other quite well. Not all salons do gal-type nails. Most actually don’t, or don’t advertise it. Some that do charge obscene prices. Instead Nail Salon Bibi was 9800 yen with everything included. I know that sounds like a lot, but Carry is offering a special right now that is 11500 with some things not included. Bibi was everything included: taking my old nails off, 3-d work, doing a gel coat. All of those things usually run extra at all other salons.

Nails just fresh from being done!

The rose design was hand painted on with guache done to match my dress I’m wearing for the Tokyo Girls Collection (so excited!). Everyone thinks it’s a stamp, but it was actually done with an extremely small paint brush.

That’s why they call it Nail ART!

The Alpaca was slowly built up and she went back on it and guached the cheeks for the blush.

The Alpaca next to its likeness. She did quite a great job!

Nail Salon BIBI is highly recommended. Although she and I didn’t match like Coco from Disco and we didn’t speak much (TV was on), which is a negative for me since any Japanese conversation practice I can get in I jump at it :butterfly: . However, I do think her talent is really amazing. You ask, she’ll do! They are located next to the giant recommended Shin Okubo Donki (which is actually easier to walk from Shinjuku East Exit through the host clubs to get to).

Meet Marie & all the Alpacas

My name is Mitsu, I blog about Japanese gal fashion, and I’m addicted to alpaca love! :worries:

It started with one and Uhhhhh just kind of grew :worry:

Most are from the Valentine’s collection. All of them were won for me (thanks Alice, Tom and Z :heartshake: ) I suck at UFO catchers. :(

The bigger ones are also SOOOOOO soft! It’s like rare animal soft. Like touching the last unicorn soft

My favorite pink family :waves:

The biggun, Marie, with my w♥c glasses. Her head is almost as big as my melonhead! She’s bigger than my cats! I didn’t name the others, but when a plush is this large, it gets a name! :happydance:

Since my formspring has gotten a lot of Alpaca questions I thought I’d do a quick Alpaca FAQ here:

What are they? A plush toy found only in UFO catcher machines by the maker “Arpakasso”

Where can I get them? At your local game center if you live in Japan. If you don’t, your best bet is yahoo auctions or mbok auctions. I do not know if they are anywhere else on-line.

How much do they cost? Depends if you win them the first time or not but it’s between 100 yen to 500 yen to play once depending on the size :worry:

Can you win one for me? Nope! I suck! I have bad depth perception which is a key to doing well at it :sage:

other ufo catcher pictures: here , here , and here

Game Centers are somehow able to buy the giant alpacas which are not for sale or winning at their Game Centers. Mainly they’re for taunting addicted people like me who imagine the world’s best Rodeo with just stuffed alpacas. :yayforyay:

Here they are in a Shinjuku Kabukicho Game Center showing their Holiday spirit.

They also have Alpaca gear that’s not just plushes including these earmuffs and currently a diary with plushy alpaca cover.

So many cute Alpaca heads! :superhappy: I’m dying just looking at the picture and I took it :worry:

Are you an alpaca addict? If not, omg why? hehehee :cat: Just kidding, more for me :cheery:

    Cuteness overload!!

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:31 am

hehehe it’s what I think too when I relook at this post :happydance:

  2. February 17, 2011 / 9:18 am

lol, you guys and your Alpacas! I’ve even started trying to win them for Emma :P I’m a Mamegoma fan… and sadly he cannot be won in a UFO catcher :( I wonder if Mamegoma and alpacas could be friends? lol.

Have you seen real Alpacas up close? My mom knits their fur, and sadly, they are not as cute as the pink UFO catcher ones :(

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:32 am

Yes I do wonder how such a boring and not very cute animal got chara-ed so well

hehehe of course they could be friends. I’d be so happy if Alpacas weren’t UFO catchers. Paying a price I know sounds much safer than risking my luck!

  3. February 17, 2011 / 9:20 am

Wow, I am in love with your Alpaca-collection! Absolutely adorable.
The nails combine some of my favorite things – floral patterns, pink and alpacas.

But I didn’t know one can only get the plushies from those UFO-catchers… I wanted to ask a friend of mine to get me one the next time she’s in Japan. :(

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:45 am

Awwh thank you for your sweet words on alpacas and my nails. Some of my two favorite things lately hehee :hearts:

Yeah it’s a bummer than you can only win them, not buy them :^_^;;:

  4. February 17, 2011 / 9:22 am

    They’re so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute !!!

I loved them since the first time you showed them n____n

I’m in Canada and there’s nothing like them out here, and while I was in Japan I didn’t even take the time to try the UFOs (though I think I wouldn’t be very good at it either u___u).

My addiction are Mamegoma  rather than Alpaca, but I think they are similar. Just different animal plushes n___n

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:46 am

I agree I think they’re pretty similar. Although I admit to my alpaca bias hehehe :happydance:

Happy to alpaca post when I can :heartshake:

  5. February 17, 2011 / 9:55 am

    kyaa i love the nails!

    • Mitsu
      February 17, 2011 / 10:24 am

      Thank you! :yayblush:

  6. February 17, 2011 / 10:15 am

wow glam nails!! I can surely draw the floral details only if I have nails as long as yours :> cute!

    • Mitsu
      February 17, 2011 / 10:24 am

ehehe I don’t think my nails are that long this time. LOL I got them filed down quite a bit so lol I guess my definition of long has changed. LongER nails do help with design aspects

    February 17, 2011 / 10:19 am

Hey who won your competition?? Even I am curious and I didn’t even sign up for it. It hasn’t been announced!!

    • Mitsu
      February 17, 2011 / 10:22 am

I announced it to the winner and through twitter. I just didn’t feel the need to make a post or such notifying others. Although with so many people asking maybe I’ll have to do it next contest, whenever that may be.

  8. February 17, 2011 / 10:20 am

But srsly, will someone win me one?!

    • Mitsu
      February 17, 2011 / 10:22 am

I would if I had any skill whatsoever. You should ask Emma the Great!

      • February 17, 2011 / 2:21 pm

Ill be sure to call her that whilst begging hehe

Theres a ufo machine in the arcade by work, it hase HUGE chocolate bars in and I am determined to defeat it one day hah

  9. February 17, 2011 / 10:39 am

Alpacaaaaaas! I want the earmuffs. I wish ebay didn’t mark everything up so horribly -_-

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:43 am

Does eBay even have them? They do really mark them up, that’s the horrible thing with UFO catcher items. >_<

Oh, I love the alpaca spamming on Twitter, haha :)

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:44 am

Yay!! Happy to alpaca spam :D
I agree they’re very soft looking, not usually my style but I’m trying to explore it on my terms :heart2:

  19. February 17, 2011 / 12:37 pm

That’s some serious talent painting those flowers!!

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:30 am

I agree! I think she has some painter talent to go with her practical nail skills

  20. February 17, 2011 / 12:44 pm

    • Mitsu

  22. February 17, 2011 / 1:01 pm

Major nail love! This set is one of my favorites you’ve gotten ever. Ahhh, so much skills with the rose art and alpaca sculpting.

The plushies are very cute. Can’t say I’m an addict, but I do “awww” each time I see them, hehe.

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:29 am

I think it’s one of my favorites too! Although my taste is usually more bold and design oriented, girly stuff also works, too!

They make me awwh too ♥

  23. February 17, 2011 / 2:48 pm

So cute!!! : D I love the nail designs! :hearts:

  26. February 17, 2011 / 4:05 pm

Cuuute~ I love alpacas too! Especially the ones by Honyaradoh, thought I’ve only managed to collect their sheep items lol.

And your nails are nice  I love the floral pattern.

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:25 am

      Sheep are still adorable, though!

    February 17, 2011 / 5:38 pm

I am in love with Alpaca too!!! Around Dec 2010 is was the first time I saw them. There werent many machine that have them yet. I won a small one on my first tried so it’s only 100 yen!!!! I want the earmuff now that you post the image.

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:23 am

I think the earmuffs are gone and replaced by schedule books covered in the soft plush hehee

I think they are relatively new, but oh so cute ♥

  30. February 17, 2011 / 9:38 pm

Wow you really love you some alpaca XDDD Your nails just blow me away, they are soooo cute and well done. They are perfect for you, and that price is so great for the details that are on the nails^^

Your collection is certainly growing at a great rate :nudges only 2 alpaca collection into the corner: I have only ever seen the alpaca in arcades in Shinjuku, I wonder why??

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:19 am

hahaha you didn’t realize it? Or was Emma also being such an alp-whore that we tied each other in Alpaca crazyness.
Awwh thank you! I hope they suit my dress ^_^
I don’t know. There are some in Ikebukuro, but I’ve noticed a lot of stores don’t carry them. Maybe it’s a marketing issue?

  31. February 17, 2011 / 10:54 pm

omg, your nails!!! only 9800yen?!? seriously, i am bookmarking this and going there next time! i have had a feeling that my nailist has been ripping me off for a long time, and if i didn’t have an appointment for tonight already, i woulda tried to to go saturday!! argh. thanks for sharing though.

don’t really get the alcapa love, but it’s cute ;) i am obsessed with hello-kitty and rilakkuma though, so i can’t really talk, haha… alos suck at UFO catchers, so i feel your pain! :p

    • Mitsu
      February 18, 2011 / 5:30 am

Oh thank you so much for agreeing!! I always think people think I’m a bit loopy when I discuss nail prices in Japan, but it is a good price for their work. :heartshake: It’s a good shop, and I love their hours! Although I am unsure if their price for a set extends past a first time visit. She didn’t say anything and the hot pepper ad mentions nothing about it. If she’s always 9800, that’d be awesome

I love hk and rila, too, but there’s a lot of character cuteness in Japan to occupy my heart ehhee

  32. February 17, 2011 / 11:21 pm

the earmuffs! waaaaaaah~! XD :yayyay: :happydance: :hands: :hearts: :hearts:

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:18 am

hehehe so cute, right? :D My friends tried to win them, but with their shape it’s hard to “claw” them.

  33. Ruthie
    February 18, 2011 / 2:50 am

OMG, they are my favourite of all your nails. The girl did an awesome job with them and for only 9,800 yen – that’s a bargain!

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:18 am

Yay! So glad you understand nail prices! I agree, I got my money’s worth with that shop :D

  34. February 18, 2011 / 6:47 am

Your nails are probably the most fabulous nails I’ve ever seen. The roses, the stones, the alpacas…just too perfect! :hearts: I wish I could get my hands on an alpaca, but I suck at the UFO catchers as well. :sage:

    • Mitsu
      February 19, 2011 / 12:17 am

Oh thank you so much for such a sweet compliment!

      I feel your UFO pain >_< I've never won one on my own >_<;;

  35. February 18, 2011 / 10:53 pm

may i ask, how you do the word “read more” in a beatiful and cute writing with sweet colour, just like what you do on your post..
    have the website??
can reply with the link for me??

    • Mitsu
      February 18, 2011 / 11:35 pm

It’s CSS combined with wordpress. The read more is my handwriting done writing on a computer drawing tablet. :bowhouse:

      • February 20, 2011 / 10:25 am

        oh :) thank you <3

  36. February 20, 2011 / 12:00 am

  38. Amanda G.
    September 2, 2011 / 6:07 pm

Are those alpaca earmuffs still available in the machines? Also, is there anyway you could win me a pair so I can have them for this winter??

    • Mitsu
      September 3, 2011 / 7:51 am

Nope, they change them out every 2 months or so and I am bad at winning (as I said) so I can’t help, sorry!

  39. Kim
    September 16, 2011 / 1:32 pm

I’m SOOOOOOO jealous! I only have one that I ordered online that was wayyyyyy overpriced since the service bought them in the UK and then forwarded it to me in the US. :hearts2:

    • Mitsu
September 17, 2011 / 9:43 pm looking for alpacas is the cheapest I think, the shipping is still bad however >_<
