Evolving Japanese makeup trends is a personal obsession especially with gyaru and former gyaru brands. Duras has stayed pretty close to its former look with some interesting trends. Today’s post I’d like to talk about the changes, their current look and how it’s different from a post I did five years ago about Duras. Also all about brand make-up looks and Hair and Makeup Artist and Instructor Jun Jun.

So much to discuss in one post, let’s get to it!

Hair Make Jun Jun – Making the Youth Japanese Makeup Trends

This post also gives me a chance to talk about Hair and Make-up Artist and Instructor Jun Jun (insta government name Jungen Iwamoto but rarely ever called that). Jun Jun has been working on gyaru hair and make-up since almost the beginning of gyaru and is responsible for creating the brand looks of tons of brands Duras, Moussy and more. His resume is super impressive, he does make-up for Larme, Ane Ageha, Blenda, Jelly and various brands designing their look for the season and instructing the brands how to carry it out.

Whether Jun Jun has been the maker of trends is debatable, but he’s definitely the one who has carried out most of the Japanese youth trends for the last 7 years. Last April he put out his own make-up book.

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 4.48.31 PM

Just some lip gloss only.

He’s super free-spirited and known for being best friends with Genking, and there’s a lot of rumors he’s Genking’s boyfriend (denied by both), if he’s gay etc…, but that shouldn’t detract from his supreme make-up skills.

Side rant note: I really want to do a post later on Genking because it’s been pissing me off to see these English blogs talk about genderless-kei in Japan without mentioning Genking. He’s currently King of genderless who’s on Japanese TV so much is not getting many English shout outs instead these blog articles pushing their own agenda  //endrant//

On the Godmake Youtube channel Jun Jun’s done a lot of tutorials for Japanese makeup trends including one on how to do make-up like Larme queen Risa Nakamura. You can see Jun Jun’s technique in his videos so I really recommend them.

Brand Make-up Tutorials

Jun Jun came to visit the Duras headquarters and instructed girls possibly the whole Tokyo staff and also Duras shop managers from around the country on how the DURAS LOOK will be for that season. He does this every season for Duras.

duras-makeup-instruction

Jun Jun instructing all the girls on the proper steps. Usually the girls have pads of paper and phones to document the process.

hairmake-jun-jun-japanese-makeup-trend-instruction

He thoroughly goes over each step. He’s instructing our current Duras Spring 2016 hairmake model.

junjun-hairmake-instruction

Afterwards the girls practice on themselves overseen by Jun Jun and his assistants give advice on hair.

Each season a brand gets a list of products to use. You will usually see the whole entire shop staff across the country in the same lipstick. It’s how the brand creates unity and sells a look.

Duras make-up for Spring 2016 showing off the change in Gyaru make-up

One of the reasons I first wanted to talk about Duras spring make-up is because Duras now has a wordpress blog (http://www.duras.jp/blog) and they’re posting really big quality photos. Also they posted their make-up with a product list, which helps people recreate it.

Doing this post I search through my previous Duras posts and found one from 2011 that has them doing similar trends with hair and make-up, but it’s different. I feel a lot long-term gyaru brands Rienda, Duras and MA*RS especially are doing this look back fashion but with a modern twist. Rienda with their 10th anniversary reissuing old prints and staying connected to their past. MA*RS keeping with some pink and black, but bringing it to a little less agejo and more onee.

Here’s Duras’s Spring Look for 2016 and before I get into breaking the look I want to do a side by side…

duras-hairmake-2011-and-2016

Duras 2011 and Duras 2016

I absolutely love finding these two looks because you can really start comparing and contrasting. My fashion nerdy heart is all doki doki right now.

Less heavy fringe, softer circle lens (but still circle lens), the different strength of lashes, holy christ THE BROW DIFFERENCE, the darker lip

When people talk about the current state of gyaru make-up they say that everything has gotten lighter. That is just not true. Sure contacts and lashes are less, but the brows and lips are much bolder. And Duras isn’t shying away from a bold color for their 2016 eye season.

I think focus is changing and  there’s not as many harsh contrasts in 2016. The harsh in 2011 being super black make-up with blonder hair and non-lip and brow. The spikier eyelashes. Or the more striking circle lens.

duras-2011-and-2016-style

2011 vs 2016 Duras long hair arrange

Not as easy to compare, but Duras is instead using a scarf instead of a bouffant pouf to create volume. I think the soft Oneegyaru curls are really nice for the 2016 look. This 2016 shop staff is in lashes.

There’s still volume, but less is made by teasing. Instead curling, scarves and loose buns and braids create the volume.

Duras Spring 2016 Product List

Need a moment, she’s so super cute! :cheery:

Duras says their focus of this season’s look is Eyeshadow color.

In some ways it pays into the trends YSL is doing this season (big in Japan) as well as Japanese brand Majolica Majorca with green eyeshadows and highlighter taking center stage.

Eyebrow: Bibo Eyebrow Muse A (cosme rakuten)

Eyebrow 2: Integrate BR731 (cosme rakuten)

Highlight: MAC Cream Color Base in Luna (mac)

Eyeshadow 1: Dior Shadow Mono 430 in Fiji (cosme i think JP only?)

Eyeshadow 2: shu uemura ME472 deep olive (shu uemura)

Eyeshadow 3: RMK Ingenious Powder Eyes ME04 (cosme rakuten)

Lip Color: Clinique Pop Lip Color in Melon Pop (sephora)

Lip Gloss: Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss in Apricot (cosme ulta)

Duras says the goals for the make-up are: Highlight for supple skin and a strong eye with a nude lip

More In Depth Breakdown

Duras posted on their webstore even deeper make-up instruction. These super in depth photos are so useful if you’d like to recreate the look.

hightlight-2

In order to balance the face highlight your nose and make it appear taller. The whole concept of highlighting is a balanced face.

re-1

Use the three eyebrow shadows and pencils to make your eyebrows taller. Use the redder one on top to create a more 3-d natural brow.

re-3-2

Use the Dior light green eyeshadow all along your eyelid and lower eyelid. Use the dark olive Shu Uemura eyeshadow with water or face lotion to smoke out the liner. Let the eyeliner drop down for a more round and curved shape.

re-4

Since it’s Spring a nude lip is really suitable. Use concealer before if you have to.

A bit sad that they don’t give instruction for eyelashes because it’s obvious she’s in them in the profile photo.

Are other brands looks different? Sure! But Duras 2011 vs 2016 really has given me so much food for thought for this one post. Maybe some other comparisons later….

Side note: Can’t believe I was blogging back in 2011. It seems so long ago. Thank you for keeping reading!  :hearts3:   :loveword:

I’m heading to Japan soon and I’ll be doing the majority of my shopping there for my Japan Spring wardrobe. I don’t plan to buy that much, or rather less than I have in the past. I feel I have my current style mood right now of what I want to wear and build around that. This is my Japan Spring wardrobe wish list I definitely can’t afford to buy it all, but I’ll definitely try it all on.  I love seeing these posts from other bloggers, so I hope you’ll enjoy mine.

My current theme for Spring/Summer is: Girly bohemian casual.

Where I live I now spend a lot of dressed up time (i.e. non-potato time) walking to restaurants and shops, so I want cute things that are cute to walk lots in and comfortable also go well with sandals and other easy shoes. I usually walk a few miles a day on days like this and it’s made a lot of my other clothes unwearable for not being comfy for long walks. I’m trying to be really aware of comfy and casual.

Duras Offshoulder Onepiece (here)

japan spring wardrobe

I love everything about this look. Bring back hair scarfs! Duras usually has one piece I’ll buy each season and wear the hell out of. I bet this one will be it. This is Duras look my main goal and look inspiration for Spring/Summer.

Rienda Picnic V-Neck Onepiece (here)

japan spring wardrobe

Rienda brought back this Pucci-inspired print for their 10th anniversary and I really hope it restocks because it seems the perfect dress for summer lunch.

Prints please come back to fashion more! I crave the prints!

Egoist Smart Tapered Pants in Pink (here)

egoist-tapered-pants L0EGO16A33_1

I’m a sucker for pastel pants and I like the loose styling of these pants. They look like they would suit a lot of summer tops.

Datura Rose Panel Tank Onepiece (here)

L0DAT16A45_1

Datura was a big miss for me for Winter because there was too much repeat, but I really love their Spring line. My favorite is this dress. Wondering how it will fit on my tall potato frame, but I hope to at least try it on and see.

Resexxy Denim Fringe Tight Onepiece (here)

M151610306100_M_LL

Girly edgy denim is life. I really love the figure flattering V trim.

Resexxy Color Tweed Fringe Jacket (here)

M151611772500_p_01_LL

I don’t know if I would’ve look at this twice if not for Emi x Lea‘s love of this and Emi always styling it so well. I really want the blue to offset all my pink purchasing.

Snidel Flower Embroidery Onepiece (here)

SND0116S0010_pz_c103

The design could either be girly and loose or make me look dumpy. Either way I’ll find out. Love Snidel’s venturing into bohemian for this season.

Cecil McBee Off-Shoulder Blouse (here)

L1CEC16B02_03_1

This blouse is already sold-out, but I hope they restock. It looks like it could suit a lot of skirt types.

Dazzlin Felt Hat (here)

SND0115W0273_pz_c102M021611002100_p_02_LL

That model’s hair is so cute. :hearts3:  Hat addict wants another hat. This is not news.

See by Chloe Gold Wedges (here)

see-by-chloe-shoe

My non-Japanese item on the list. I’ve moved to mostly leather shoes because they hold up better. These gold wedges are perfect. I love gold leaf, I want to see more gold leaf on fashion.

…and for some quirk

Merry Jenny Piping Set-up (here)

M281610800800_M_LL

Merry Jenny isn’t always my fashion lately, but I usually find something each season I love, buy and wear often. This sleepwear turned day wear suits my roomwear addicted heart.

…and roomwear

Gelato Pique Cotton Lace Set-up (here)

PIQ0116S0137_pz_a011

I’m addicted to roomwear and had to include some in my Japan Spring wardrobe wishlist. I plan on doing a series about Japanese roomwear with reviews beyond my blurb I had in the staying cute during winter in Japan. I love that Gelato Pique does one set-up each season that seems so fashion trend. The off shoulder looks really cute but probably still comfy for sleep. Last season’s Gelato Pique trend-as-sleep was gaucho pants. :cheery:

What’s on your Japan Spring wardrobe wishlist?

It’s just starting to get hot but this is the season for Fall exhibitions or tenjikai/展示会 as they are known and I really liked what I saw of Rienda, Duras and Mercury Duo so I thought I’d show them.

Just when I said I wouldn’t do this kind of thing, I do it… typical blogger.

I think summer is the worst thing ever, I fear it. Let it snowwwww, let it snoowwwww!!! Looking forward to Fall fashion (aka my favorite time of year and styles) makes me happy and I’m happy to report about it.

Rienda – Fall 2015 – Modern Glamour

Lots of traditional popular Fall themes such as pinstripe and houndstooth. Mixed with rich items such as jewel tones and fur coats along with floral onepieces.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.24.45 PM

Their popular floral dress using an beveled weave for the Spring done in a more Fall palette

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.25.13 PM

Houndstooth and pointy shoes.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.43.16 PM

Pinstripe and light tweeds.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.17.58 PM

Transitional outfit but denim jackets are still alive for Fall.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.20.18 PM

Floppy hats and mustard.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.21.47 PM

Love this lady simple houndstooth.

Duras – Fall 2015 – Radiant Muse

A continuation of their Spring line with lots of kadeliscope (Persian inspired?) prints, restrained bodycon (tight but not often short) and a swingy bohemian style.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.27.17 PM

That print dress is everything and I really want to buy it.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.27.50 PM

The A-line dress trend and layered stripes are Spring trends done in autumn colors for Fall.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.28.52 PM

Jeweled cardigan trend for Spring making a more subdued trend with pearls. Lots of light colored outers mixed with darker dresses.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.28.40 PM

Extremely typical Duras styles. I bought the left dress in Spring in almost the exact same cut. More Fall hat trends.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.29.10 PM

Such a cute bustier that could be done Larme or Agejo style. Lavender for Fall I have doubts on but this transitional coordinate makes it work. Duras wants to do a few lavender pieces so we’ll see!

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.29.00 PM

More tweed set-ups to come out.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.28.31 PM

Trying to tell myself I don’t need this dress, but I love the color choices.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.26.57 PM

The full collection looking fabulous. I love that they had a selfie mirror as their press advertisement.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.27.41 PM

Pointy shoes again! Clutches are big as well as lady-like totes and 2-way bags (top handle + shoulder strap).

Mercury Duo – Fall 2015

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.30.22 PM

Just like Rienda, a mustard lace overlay item.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.30.32 PM

A lot of brands may be trying to make fringe work. Unsure the inroads it’ll make this Fall.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.30.41 PM

Boxy cropped blouses continue, and yes there’s mustard!

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.30.56 PM

A-line floral dress? A-line floral dress. Pick your brand you’ll probably find one.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.31.07 PM

This hidden pleats look has been a small summer trend and could be a larger Fall one.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.31.18 PM

In Fall skirts. Oh black you hide everything.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.32.33 PM

A trend look for Mercury Duo fall. Earth mustard brown, and a floral long skirt, with fringe bag. The bucket bag style is becoming popular (vintage influences). Check all the prints with mustard options. Mustard will be so big!

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.32.47 PM

Toggle coats in pastels. Light outers will be very popular.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.32.59 PM

Welcome back floppy hats.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.33.09 PM

Floral sweater set-ups should be big with otona kawaii crowd, a trend from last Fall.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.33.21 PM

Earthy mustard browns.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.33.35 PM

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.33.48 PM

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.33.54 PM

Chunky heel + pointed toe. There will be so many colors and prints to choose from in this look for Fall.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.34.27 PM

Their Fall transitional look.

Screen Shot 2015-05-20 at 2.34.35 PM

I think some brands will try to push culottes. I have doubts they will be successful, but hey mustard!

Check for these trends!

BIG Trends: FLORALS, browns, mustards, pointy shoes, light colored outers, A-line dresses, floppy hats

Medium trends: traditional prints such as pinstripes and stripes and houndstooth, pastels mixed with darker colors or browns, fringe, bucket bags, 2-way bags.

Florals for Winter? Moderately groundbreaking….

I actually am really excited for Fall and a lot of these trends seem shop-worthy now. A bit shocked by the complete lack of pants. I know Otona Kawaii and Oneegyaru brands don’t do them often but it definitely seems they’re not in style right now. It’s always cheaper to shop off season so maybe you can find some cute used or vintage pieces that reflect these looks for cheap!

While I was in Hawaii I was able to nab the May issue of SCawaii with w*c chief Wakatsuki Chinatsu as the covergirl :korila:

It’s a fabulous issue and a few trend updates really stuck with me. SCawaii is doing a great job with their mag showing trends and great coordinates. Sometimes I pass them up for the flashier Popteen and Ageha, but SCawaii really does smart looks. :sparkle2:

Chinatsu in Chanel showcasing our Mori Jewelry trend. So hard to beat.

The title for this issue: Power Mori “Value Set” Issue (lol)

I talked about Mori (盛り) previously during the Mori Gyaru article, it is a verb meaning to raise or build up. It’s used more like a video game idea of Leveling Up. Kind of like how the chant “Age! Age!” has become some popular with gals (meaning to raise up as well). It’s so common to see in magazines recently when discussing hair, make-up, coordinates and now jewelry. :cheery:
