I’ve stayed loyal to my Avarice nail salon in Harajuku (previous posts) for several years now for Japanese gel nail art. Their work continues to amaze me and no matter what I come with they’re up to the task. NOW they have an English speaking nail artist who did a working holiday in Australia. She’s lovely and loves to chat in english. So I super recommend Avarice even more to my readers! Just remember if booking on hotpeper to mention English.

1950s Cinderella Gel Nails

Disney’s Cinderella nails! I wanted these to be pretty simple but still have that great gel nail art. The art is based on the original 1950 animated feature. I’ve become a big Disney nerd and the classic styles of Disney are my favorite. Simple with a few details: Cinderella herself, her slipper and a hint of the pumpkin carriage.

My nails had gotten so short! But that’s no problem for Avarice Harajuku superb gel nail art everytime! This time I wanted the theme of the Chanel Paris-Dallas collection. Being a Texan I’ve always wanted a Texas flag or shape on my nails. Even though I’m anti-gun I’ve oddly also wanted gun nails. The Coco Chanel portrait was based on the flyers they handed out for the Paris-Dallas collection.

Pretty close right?

The gun was a 90s part of a belt. I liked it better than the Paris-Dallas gun jewelry so in it went.

Mad Max: Fury Road Gel Nails

I GOT MAD MAX NAILS!!! Mad Max: Fury Road is my favorite movie of the last few years. I knew when I had the chance I would try to make Mad Max nails happen.

My nailist hadn’t watched the movie, so showing her photos she gave me the look that said: why do you want this on your nails? It’s totally unkawaii. Then I played her the Japanese trailer and that did not win her over either. And then I tried to explain the movie in Japanese, which was a complete failure. Trying to explain it in English just ends up with me yelling WAR GUITAR!! or FURIOSA!! and then slipping into happy fangirl goo.

Then she got to it… and asked if it’s okay if I make them more “manga” and they won’t look exactly like them. I was like my expectations are low, I just need to fangirl more.

BUT CHECK THEM OUT! OMG! War Boy! Furiosa! Mad Max!

Furiosa was like my Mona Lisa nail. No matter the light she’s always staring at me.

Mad Max and Furiosa! Avarice gel nail art wins all the awards.

My hands were super dry. I had just landed in Japan. My hands go horrible on the flight and stay bad in Japan. The air and public restroom soaps just kill my hands. Hand lotion is your friend in Japan. I actually discovered my favorite hand lotion for traveling is MUAC AHA Hand and Body lotion. I was given a sample and it just takes care of dry spots immediately because of its alpha hydroxy acids. It doesn’t provide the lovely scents of other hand lotions, but overnight total change in dryness!

When I was back in Tokyo in November I was able to visit my beloved nail art salon “Nail Salon Avarice” (previous posts | tumblr ) in Harajuku and get some new nail designs. Their gel nail art designs are always top notch and I think Nail Salon Avarice outdid themselves on both sets.

All eyes on me. Literally. One of my funkiest sets. It’s actually Brigitte Bardot deconstructed and psychedelic prints. I kind of like how beautiful humans look funky and weird when deconstructed.

Here’s my original quick and shoddy sketch for my nail art designs I took to Avarice. Pretty awesome how they put it on nails, right?

Since I forgot to take pictures of my thumb art together here’s my thumbs doing everyday things.

Psychedelic print thumb number one holding a delicious chikuwa in Miyajima, Hiroshima.

Eyebrow, hair and eye thumb number two holding my Etude House Princess Etoinette Crystal Lips Lipstick.

My favorite nail art designs I’ve gotten done in a long time.

James Bond Villan Nail Art Designs

So inspiration strikes us in various ways. I was dead set on getting James Bond themed nails. I had never gotten movie nails before and I have watched all of the James Bond films more than twice so I was prepared to nerd on. But I had to simplify my nails and only get two really crafted out.

So I chose to be inspired by this James Bond fanart by Ben Jelfs (http://benjelfs.com/). No it’s not Dr. Evil and Mr. Bigglesworth. It’s Ernst Stravo Blofeld, the original Dr. Evil and his persian. Yup nerding up a storm.

Take a good look at that artwork because it’s amazingly redone on nails.

Freakin’ amazing right? She got all the tiny details done on the persian and the great head shading on Blofeld. Those are my nails a month in, still looking good though.

Close-up of the Persian cat nail art design. Ahh I love the cat x cat mix. Shown with a Paul and Joe Makeup Cat blush. Doesn’t the persian look appropriately sour? I love sour looking cats.

I had to cancel the day before and I ran into time constraints and could only do a simpler design the day I left on a plane. I was freaking out worried about missing my flight while getting my nails done. It was so stressful.

You know why Avarice is awesome??

I cancelled on them, I was unable to call and cancel. I was the bad and horrible one!! But you know what they did? I got a handwritten note from Kayo apologizing that she had her day off the next day and couldn’t work on me AND the discount price I earned with my hot pepper points they used. Seriously, Avarice is the best. I keep recommending it to people and more satisfied people leave. It’s such a wonderful place!

My girl Alanna also went to Avarice and got these awesome Galaxy-themed nails. Pretty cool, right?

These art my self done Gelish nails that I did before leaving for Japan. I get really nervous about going to a Japan Nail Salon without showing up in nice nails so I took a bit of time on these. Done with all soft-gel Gelish and parts from Shibuya Nail Store TAT (review and info on that soonish let me get my hair salon series done first). Since nautical is trending for Spring I’m going to use up my gold shell nail deco.

Universal-Doll facebook note: I’ve been working on the facebook page lately so that you know when there’s a new post on the Doll also I’ll be starting a weekly series called “Lost Photos of the Doll” photos I have taken in Japan but never made themselves into posts. If you’d like to see more Japan and fun/cute/gyaru items please check the Universal-Doll facebook

As usual I browse beauty.hotpepper.jp for nail appointments in Japan and was amazed to find a nail salon doing proper original style. Since Disco Nails Shibuya (post 1 | post 2) seriously took off and Nagi Coco has been doing interviews for documentaries on nail art and full page spreads in nail magazines and even traveled to London recently to do a demonstration. They changed locations and their prices (understandably) skyrocketed. I’ve been trying to find another salon that does awesome work but still well priced.

Finally Ava-Rice Nail Salon to the rescue! Their new salon is in Harajuku and is just two women doing great nails in a quiet setting. My nailist Aya Yoshida (instagram) was one of the nicest nailists. I got my nails done the day after I landed and she was so kind to my jetlagged language blunders and was so happy to chat about anything or just relax and sit back. Beyond her niceness her nails are solid. Recently even Momoko Ogihara called out her outstanding skills.

Some of their recent work. Fabulous, right?

Exploring all the popular nail art trends for Spring fashion through gyaru shop staff’s nails. Over 40 pictures of nail sets from popular gyaru stores. Popular nail art colors for the season and designs. I did a post last Spring showing of gyaru nail art trends and most of those are still going on. I also did a previous post of gyaru short nail art inspiration in case you’re needing more ideas for your nails. None of these pictures my own, all found on the shop staff blogs of each store (Liz Lisa, MA*RS, Titty&Co, Monkey Bite, Sly and Lip Service).

Lip Service shop staff showing off parts variety and yellow along with floral flat art as a popular gyaru nail style for Spring. I’d say these nails are the essential trends in Spring.

Colored french along with some color-blocking for Lip Service. Color blocking seems to become more popular for Fall. RTW Western designers are trying to push color blocking again this coming Fall, unsure how much it will go into gyaru for Fall.

More simple parts on Lip Service shop staff. Along with yellow, the french triangle style I think is a growing trend.

Lip Service showing again that floral flat art done two ways is all the rage mixed with a Spring pastel color.

Sly shop staff are really into colored french styles.
