Evolving Japanese makeup trends is a personal obsession especially with gyaru and former gyaru brands. Duras has stayed pretty close to its former look with some interesting trends. Today’s post I’d like to talk about the changes, their current look and how it’s different from a post I did five years ago about Duras. Also all about brand make-up looks and Hair and Makeup Artist and Instructor Jun Jun.

So much to discuss in one post, let’s get to it!

Hair Make Jun Jun – Making the Youth Japanese Makeup Trends

This post also gives me a chance to talk about Hair and Make-up Artist and Instructor Jun Jun (insta government name Jungen Iwamoto but rarely ever called that). Jun Jun has been working on gyaru hair and make-up since almost the beginning of gyaru and is responsible for creating the brand looks of tons of brands Duras, Moussy and more. His resume is super impressive, he does make-up for Larme, Ane Ageha, Blenda, Jelly and various brands designing their look for the season and instructing the brands how to carry it out.

Whether Jun Jun has been the maker of trends is debatable, but he’s definitely the one who has carried out most of the Japanese youth trends for the last 7 years. Last April he put out his own make-up book.

He’s super free-spirited and known for being best friends with Genking, and there’s a lot of rumors he’s Genking’s boyfriend (denied by both), if he’s gay etc…, but that shouldn’t detract from his supreme make-up skills.

Side rant note: I really want to do a post later on Genking because it’s been pissing me off to see these English blogs talk about genderless-kei in Japan without mentioning Genking. He’s currently King of genderless who’s on Japanese TV so much is not getting many English shout outs instead these blog articles pushing their own agenda  //endrant//

On the Godmake Youtube channel Jun Jun’s done a lot of tutorials for Japanese makeup trends including one on how to do make-up like Larme queen Risa Nakamura. You can see Jun Jun’s technique in his videos so I really recommend them.

Brand Make-up Tutorials

Jun Jun came to visit the Duras headquarters and instructed girls possibly the whole Tokyo staff and also Duras shop managers from around the country on how the DURAS LOOK will be for that season. He does this every season for Duras.

Afterwards the girls practice on themselves overseen by Jun Jun and his assistants give advice on hair.

Each season a brand gets a list of products to use. You will usually see the whole entire shop staff across the country in the same lipstick. It’s how the brand creates unity and sells a look.

One of the reasons I first wanted to talk about Duras spring make-up is because Duras now has a wordpress blog (http://www.duras.jp/blog) and they’re posting really big quality photos. Also they posted their make-up with a product list, which helps people recreate it.

Doing this post I search through my previous Duras posts and found one from 2011 that has them doing similar trends with hair and make-up, but it’s different. I feel a lot long-term gyaru brands Rienda, Duras and MA*RS especially are doing this look back fashion but with a modern twist. Rienda with their 10th anniversary reissuing old prints and staying connected to their past. MA*RS keeping with some pink and black, but bringing it to a little less agejo and more onee.

Here’s Duras’s Spring Look for 2016 and before I get into breaking the look I want to do a side by side…

I absolutely love finding these two looks because you can really start comparing and contrasting. My fashion nerdy heart is all doki doki right now.

Less heavy fringe, softer circle lens (but still circle lens), the different strength of lashes, holy christ THE BROW DIFFERENCE, the darker lip

When people talk about the current state of gyaru make-up they say that everything has gotten lighter. That is just not true. Sure contacts and lashes are less, but the brows and lips are much bolder. And Duras isn’t shying away from a bold color for their 2016 eye season.

I think focus is changing and  there’s not as many harsh contrasts in 2016. The harsh in 2011 being super black make-up with blonder hair and non-lip and brow. The spikier eyelashes. Or the more striking circle lens.

Not as easy to compare, but Duras is instead using a scarf instead of a bouffant pouf to create volume. I think the soft Oneegyaru curls are really nice for the 2016 look. This 2016 shop staff is in lashes.

There’s still volume, but less is made by teasing. Instead curling, scarves and loose buns and braids create the volume.

Duras says their focus of this season’s look is Eyeshadow color.

In some ways it pays into the trends YSL is doing this season (big in Japan) as well as Japanese brand Majolica Majorca with green eyeshadows and highlighter taking center stage.

Duras posted on their webstore even deeper make-up instruction. These super in depth photos are so useful if you’d like to recreate the look.

In order to balance the face highlight your nose and make it appear taller. The whole concept of highlighting is a balanced face.

Use the three eyebrow shadows and pencils to make your eyebrows taller. Use the redder one on top to create a more 3-d natural brow.

Use the Dior light green eyeshadow all along your eyelid and lower eyelid. Use the dark olive Shu Uemura eyeshadow with water or face lotion to smoke out the liner. Let the eyeliner drop down for a more round and curved shape.

Since it’s Spring a nude lip is really suitable. Use concealer before if you have to.

A bit sad that they don’t give instruction for eyelashes because it’s obvious she’s in them in the profile photo.

Are other brands looks different? Sure! But Duras 2011 vs 2016 really has given me so much food for thought for this one post. Maybe some other comparisons later…. :smiley:

Still recovering from being sick, so instead I thought I’d make a quick hair post about the new two-tone gal hair. Who has it, how it’s done, and opinions. :heartshake:

So of course you ladies know about old two-tone hair, if not here’s a quick recap :smiley:

This was the typical gal two-tone. Or what shall be called for purposes of this entry: vertical two-tone. Tons of ladies had it from Popteen’s Kumickky to Ageha twins Chika & Chie. However like any trend it’s becoming a bit dated.

Now the trend is horizontal two-tone and gradation. This is becoming a big trend: at least one model from Popteen, Jelly, and Egg have this style.

Number one ranking crooz blogger, Yunkuro, was one of the first to try out horizontal two-tone. She’s been obsessed with Mode lately, so she wanted sleek hair that showed off her Mode coordinates.

I really wanted to talk about another thing in the September Jelly issue about bottoms, since they’re such a concern as we turn to Fall and need to keep warm yet fabulous. There’s a lot of different looks Jelly provided and styled. Something for all gyaru here :-D

Pankinsu/Paginsu aka Jeggings – We talked about these back in MODE Week, but they’re really everywhere. I prefer to call them the romanized pankinsu or paginsu, since it sounds like someone saying punk kids. Jeggings to me sounds like a disease :-S

Either way you want to call them, they’re the big trend in bottoms and should keep you warmer than tights and shorts :upheart:

Shinjuku Isetan known for its pop-up stores is hosting w♥c for it’s store called Fayjancil (ファジャンシル). The brand is a remake brand meaning all the pieces will be different. Remake (リメイク) usually means they take an item (or two) from thrift and alter it to make a new item or different style. For example remake is: a scarf becoming a dress, a jean jacket with added embellishment, damaging/studding denim, or cutting tees.
